Organising bookmarks - Papaly

Organising boomarks with Papaly vs. browser bookmarks

I used to pin my frequent websites into Chrome’s bookmark bar removing the descriptions, so that it looked like a row of favicons linking to the most useful websites.

The problem with this method is that bookmark bar only has space for 38 icons (maybe more for a larger screen) before they get sucked into the dropdown. The other thing is when you want to bookmark more then one URL under the same domain/favicon (github repos, for example).

Savage Beauty — V&A

After visiting “Savage Beauty” exhibition of Alexander McQueen’s work at Victoria and Albert I’ve been reflecting over the dress.

It appeared in the last collection of McQueen (left unfinished at the time of his death). The dress features a mashup between elements of Hieronymus Bosch paintings: The Temptation of St. Anthony and The Garden of Earthly Delights.

Being a fan of both McQueen’s and Bosch art, I was absolutely excited to see it with my own eyes. And it got me thinking if anyone else was using Bosch paintings in clothing prints and if maybe I could get some (wearing Basquiat sweatpants to the gym makes you wonder.)

Turns out, there’re quite a few options. The trend has been set, and Bosch prints are being used in by fashion designers and even some mass-market brands.

Mini USB vacuum cleaner for keyboard

USB vacuum cleaner

Few days ago I randomly walked into Poundland, a UK store chain where everything’s 1 pound.

They have a corner with chip (and mostly useless) gadgets. However, there was a neat USB vacuum cleaner there this time. Which is kinda cool, so I bought it. Surprisingly, it kicks ass.

It has 2 suction modes, a flashlight and two brushes. It can actually clean the keyboard or similar delicate surfaces when 2000W vacuum is an overkill.

No wonder it’s 5x more expensive on Amazon.

Totally, totally worth it.

Ceremony of The Keys

Ceremony of the Keys

TL;DR Next time you’re in London, book a free ticket to Ceremony of the Keys.

I did it

It’s honestly one of the best touristy things you can do in London!

You’ll get to walk inside the Tower of London (normally £24 for a ticket) when all visitors have left, get to witness one of the oldest ceremonies with beefeaters, talk to the Chief Yeoman Warder — and it’s absolutely free!

What is Ceremony of the Keys

Ceremony of the Keys is held every night at the Tower of London, and has done so in some form or another since the 14th century.

At exactly 9.53pm, the Chief Yeoman Warder, dressed in Tudor Watchcoat, meets the military escort, made up of members of the Tower of London Guard. Together, the Chief Yeoman Warder and the Yeoman Warder ‘Watchman’ secure the main gates of the Tower.

Unfortunately, taking pictures is strictly prohibited during this event. But you can visit multiple times and bring company (just add the number of people into the booking).

Spotify Running

Spotify Running

Spotify Running is a new feature of Spotify app. It’s not a running playlist, it’s more awesome than that!

Select Running on the menu, and then the app will play tracks syncing the music beat with your running tempo. All the tracks are specifically designed so that the tempo could be changed while you’re running.

Spotify Running

When you start, hold the device for a few seconds, so that it could measure your tempo. Unfortunately it doesn’t update the tempo automatically while you’re running, but you can measure it anytime, and the track will magically adjust its tempo. Also, this allows you to put the phone away (or onto a treadmill stand) keeping the tempo.

There’re few themes that you can listen to while you’re running: Burn, Epic, Seasons, Lock the Flow, Blissed Out and The Chase. I’ve been running for 1 hour with The Chase track (remember Running with Zombies?) After 40 minutes it started feeling a little bit tedious, but again, you could always switch to another track or playlist.

If you’re a runner definitely give it a try!

Nutribullet Red

TL;DR I’m using Nutribullet to make smoothies, and it’s awesome!

Reviewing blenders is new to me, because I never had one. But somehow Nutribullet got into my head (podcasts), and I finally got one.

Nutribullet — Green Smoothie

So far it’s been fantastic! The smoothies are better than any smoothies you can buy.

And there’re so many things to make them with… Blueberries. Carrots. Celery. Almond butter. Oats. Sage. Avocados. Cashews. Mangos. Ice. Protein whey. Protein whey, Carl!

Blueberry Smoothie

It’s frighteningly powerful in a good way, and surprisingly easy to wash. Imagine washing a mug and a knife — and that’s it, literally rinses clean in ten seconds.

It’s also very compact for a blender, and can be kept on the bench or stored away in the cupboard. It’s absolutely easy to use and grinds up pretty much anything in a flash.

Good stuff.

Llop emoji

Emoji Mac shortcut, LLOP emoji, Unicode 7.0 emoji list and Symbola font

You might see “broken” images in this post, and this is totally explainable. I’m using symbols that are not yet included into standard fonts on most devices for testing purposes. It’s all good.

This is my little cheatsheet for emoji stuff: opening Mac emoji keyboard, pasting hidden emoji and viewing Unicode 7.0 emoji.

Sky Garden in London

Sky Garden is a public garden on top of the Walkie Talkie skyscraper (20 Fenchurch Street — the one melting cars with its concave glassy surface.).

There’re observation decks, open air terrace, public spaces up there. And it’s free! Though you’ll have to make an advance booking.

Sky Garden Logo View

There’s an option to book a table at one of the Sky Garden’s bars/cafes: Skypod (great cocktails), Darwin or Fenchurch Seafood. You’ll get a table for 2 hours as well as the access to Sky Garden.

Celebrating 1 year in London:

There’re a great view of Shard, Thames, Canary Wharf, City of London, Isle of Dogs, Tower Bridge and The Tower of London from up there. I’ve spent 2 hours enjoying the view and sipping the drinks up there, and already booked the next visit.

Star Realms — Logo

Card game: Star Realms review

Star Realms card game was born as a successful Kickstarter project.

Back in 2013 the creators (partly responsible for Ascension, too) reached the $20,000 funding goal in less than 5 days.

Now in 2015 it’s released as both physical deck and multi-platform digital game (iOS/Android, Windows, Mac). It’s a 2 player a spaceship combat deck-building game, average playing time is 20 minutes. If you want to play with 3-4 players, you can do it, but you’ll need two copies of the deck.

Star Realms — Mothership

As you play, you make use of Trade to acquire new Ships and Bases from the cards being turned face up in the Trade Row from the Trade Deck. You use the Ships and Bases you acquire to either generate more Trade or to generate Combat to attack your opponent and their bases. When you reduce your opponent’s score (called Authority) to zero, you win.

I’ve played it for a few hours on a train, and it’s quite enjoyable. It’s absolutely easy to learn, especially if you’re familiar with deck-building games.

star-Star Realms — Instagram

Star Realms uses a faction system that allows cards to have multiple effects based on other cards in your possession.

But unlike other deck-building games, here you need to select cards based on which other factions you have in your hand because faction powers are only activated when another card from that faction is also in play.

The game has a 5 stars on Amazon, 7.76 rating on Boardgamegeek and currently avaliable for £12 as a physical deck and £3.5 as digital multi-platform version.
